Here are few tips
- If you are migrating to Canada for the first time, you are not required to pay any duty or tax (No GST, duty, PST.. nothing.) just the RIV fee of 206$. This is part of your settlement. There is a limit of 10000$ though. If your car is worth more than 10000$, you will pay tax on the balance (Car value – 10000$).
- If you are migrating to Canada for the first time, you may not be able to arrange auto insurance in Canada. However, your USA auto insurance will probably cover you in Canada. Check with your insurance company.
- Federal inspection is free. However, you will have to pay for provincial inspection. In Alberta, it costs between 150 to 200$. It is called Out of province inspection in Alberta. You can shop around as cost of this inspection is not regulated. You will have to go thru this even if you were moving to Alberta from any other province.
